How To Become A Teacher

The first thing you need to do before you choose a teaching profession is choose the field you want to go into.  You may be more interested in teaching younger children and want to do elementary education which encompasses all core subjects or you may want to teach a specific subject as a secondary education teacher.  It is best to choose a subject you are most interested in.  Do not worry about not having job positions open.  If you are qualified and put in your time you will eventually get hired somewhere.

The next step is to talk to your academic adviser about all the main components to become a teacher.  You’ll need to find out you state’s curricular requirements, certification requirements, and what examinations are required in order for you to get your certification.

Most states only require you to get your bachelor’s degree however there are a few that require a master’s degree in order for you to be eligible to teach. In most cases you can get your bachelor’s degree in education in 4 years.  This includes all student teaching requirements.  Some states have programs that can get your master’s degree accomplished in 5 years.  New York in particular has a 5 year masters degree program.

The most common certification requirement test is the PRAXIS.  Once you pass this test you can get your teacher certification.
